Extraordinary. Offered here is a group of nine extremely scarce leather bound books from the personal library of Louis Comfort Tiffany. This is denoted by his well characterized "Louis C. Tiffany" coat of arms (patria fidelis motto) bookplate affixed to the inside cover of each volume. Additionally, at the spine, each volume demonstrates his system of cataloguing books by a sticker and a printed number. These are apparently from Section 824 of his library. The books range in age from 1841-1868 and are all written by Sir Arthur Helps and published in London (bound by Zaehnsdorf). Books have gilding at the upper edge. Helps, like Tiffany, was the son of a merchant. The books are mostly essays and feature the following titles: Essays Written in the Intervals of Business, William Pickering. 1841. Friends in Council: A Series of Readings and Discourse Thereon (book the first, second edition, stated): vols I and II. 1848, 1849. Companions of my Solitude, London, William Pickering. 1851 (former owner's name before Tiffany in 1851 script). Friends in Council: A Series of Readings and Discourse Thereon (book the first, second edition, stated): vols I and II. Savill and Edwards, 1859. Organization in Daily Life: Parker, Son, and Bourn, West Strand, London. 1862. Realmah: vols I and II, R. Clay Sons. 1868. Louis Comfort Tiffany (February 18, 1848 – January 17, 1933) was a legendary American artist and designer who worked in the decorative arts and is best known for his work in stained glass and silver. He was the first Design Director at his family company, Tiffany & Co., founded by his father Charles Lewis Tiffany. Tiffany made numerous contributions to culture and those things continue to live on and have mass appeal. He was a wealthy man, living in New York City. He is known to have treasured the books in his library. Moderate scuffing to outer covers as shown (especially rubs at corners). No other major flaw or defect. Pages bright and clean with minimal foxing. A few minor penciled numbers etc.. Overall excellent for age and use. Additional photos available upon request.
