Sterling Silver Meat Skewer or Letter Opener (108 grams)

$400.00
You'll be very hard pressed to find another heavy gauge sterling silver meat skewer like this. What separates this item from the pack of them is its highly unusual terminal and very plain design. Several possible far-flung attributions have been considered for the 'WH' maker mark. William Haverstick of Philadelphia is one though no exact match to his mark can be made. Wang Hing of China is another possibility and the mark is a good match, but no other Chinese made meat skewers have been identified and this attribution is probably late for the form. Finally, William Hannay of Paisely Scotland is a very close match though the skewer lacks his characteristic anchor town mark Certainly an intriguing and special piece. No other skewers can be identified with the knobby terminal and the overall rough character of the work. Condition is very good with minor surface scratching and patina consistent with age and use. Recovered from the Monroe and Elizabeth Dreher Collection This can certainly be used for opening the toughest letters and it is extremely strong for that purpose. Or it could be hung as a decorative object in the kitchen. If you plan on serving meats of extraordinary size, it could be used that way as well (i.e., hold the turkey or pork shoulder as you slice it). Total length is: 12.75" Check out some of my other sterling silver here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/neurorocker?section_id=6783258 Or just browse around the shop! http://www.etsy.com/shop/neurorocker
