This type of solid silver Khmer Cambodian repousse lidded box is often described as a betel box. The betel nut is a popular psychostimulant in Southeast Asia, and was often stored in these elaborate boxes. It's the perfect size to store your earrings, rings, or other little treasures. This covered box was made entirely by hand and hammer marks and other tool marks are evident. A tremendous number of hours would have been spent to make this beautiful piece of silver. From the Washington, DC area estate of the Foreign Service Officer stationed in Cambodia and Vice Consul of Egypt. Weight is 9 grams.
