Large Sterling Silver Abdulhamid II Ottoman Turkish Repousse Mirror with Peacock Finial (11")
$2,200.00
A rare antique Ottoman (Abdulhamid II (1878-1909)) repousse silver mirror. A spectacular piece of Islamic silver work. Mirror is in fabulous overall condition. This piece features a delightful peacock finial as well as a complex array of ornamented patterns. such as flowers within eight hearts and strapwork. Peacocks like the one on the handle were a popular motif in Ottoman Turkish silverwork due to their striking appearance and association with beauty and luxury. These birds were not only used as decorative motifs but also as symbols of status, power, and wealth. Silver items adorned with these motifs were often commissioned by wealthy individuals or used as gifts for royalty and other high-ranking officials. The massive weight gives it a solid feel. Totally suitable for a gift. Breathtaking. Condition is very good with typical signs of use commensurate with age. The silvering of the mirror itself shows signs of typical aging normally seen in a 19th century mirror like this. From the Washington, DC area estate of the Foreign Service Officer and Vice Consul of Egypt.
Stamped with an Arabic mark on the side and the tughra mark.
