Large 1870 Max Arthur Waagen - French Cast Sculpture Stag Beset by Hound - Pittsburgh Provenance
$290.00
A sculpture in spelter by Arthur Waagen (1833-1898). Approximate measurements: height 12.5" (base 2.5") length 18", width 9". Signed Waagen, 1870, and with a Bourbon crown foundry mark. Ebonized wood base is original and the wood beneath is heavily oxidized. The subject is a noble stag caught at the ear by a collared hound. Landscape features ferns, trees, and stones. Condition is outstanding and golden brown patina is probably original to the piece. Two figures are absent. A few very minor scuffs to the surface.
Original ownership of the piece is attributed to 19th century Pittsburgh resident, James Anderson, and an address near Market Square is noted at the obverse of the base. Date of acquisition is also present.
Waagen was born in the baltic port of Memel, East Prussia (now Klaipeda, Lithuania). He was a sculptor of German-Baltic extraction who settled permanently in Paris and exhibited at the Salon between 1861 and 1887. Waagen was one of many german artists who left their homes to pursue careers in one of the major cultural centres of Europe, such as St. Petersburg, Berlin and Paris. His extant works (of which this is one) bear exclusively french names and were cast in Paris.
