Indian Silver Porringer or Caudle Cup

$220.00
Sold here is an elegant solid silver (900) vintage Indian interpretation of a George I English 18th century porringer in the Queen Mary style. Porringers, for porridge or soup, were first made in the last half of the seventeenth century. They differ from caudle cups in that the sides are straight and not curved. The acanthus leaf decoration is often seen on them as it is here. This one has been designed and hand made in the typical Queen Anne style, with fluting and a shield. Hammer marks are not evident, and I believe this was made with a lathe and then hand finished or the repousse detailing. A touch larger than average. The decoration to the body incorporates a scrolling leaf and a royal crown motif engraved in an oval cartouche to one side. Nicely marked 'RS' (maker), India, 900/1000 SILVER. Condition is excellent. No issues noted. We Are Seven And often after sunset, sir, When it is bright and fair, I take my little porringer, And eat my supper there. -William Wordsworth, Height 4" Diameter of top 4.75" Diameter of base 2.75" Weight: 239 grams Check out some of my other English sterling silver holloware here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP?ref=shop_sugg§ion_id=6409956 Or just browse around the shop! https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP
