Ca 1920 Sterling Silver Art Nouveau Cigar Cutter by William B. Kerr & Co of Newark - Ferry Beach Oyster Bay Trophy

This cigar cutter is about as good an example of an art nouveau sterling silver as you'll likely find. William B Kerr is legendary for the highest quality art nouveau work. This cutter features raised chestnuts and leaf clusters. Marked for 'Sterling', '2083' and with the Kerr hallmark. Finally, the engraving ia: "Ferry Beach Oyster Bay June 25, 1921 100YDS. Swim, H'D'C'P 1st. newspaper searches reveal that the first place winner of the 100 yard swim was Ewald Albert Wildfoster ("Albert"). It's possible the award was given by Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. Albert was a colorful character, as shown by some of the attached newspaper clippings.
