Ca. 1764-69 Royal George III English Sterling Silver Soup Ladle Marked for the Earl Talbot of Shrewsbury (13.5")

$2,500.00
The heraldic dog on this George II parcel gilt sterling silver English soup ladle handle is described as 'a chapeau turned up ermine a talbot passant with tail extended'. Dogs are quite rare in heraldry which allows the spoon with a talbot (see photo) to be attached to a particular family and manor house. It was acquired from London makers, Henry and William Chawner, who worked in partnership with this particular mark on silver dated between 1764-69 (these marks are not found in existing registers; and thus may have been recorded in the missing 1758-1773 Largeworkers' Register). The mark is a TC over WC, lion passant, crowned leopard, and an indiscernible date mark with a lower tail (most likely O, P, or Q). This soup ladle was owned by the Duke of Shrewsbury of Alton Hall (see photo) in Staffordshire. In the 1850's, the heritage of Alton Hall fell into disorder and the contents were sold at auction by Messrs Christie and Manson. On July 21st, 1857, this ladle is noted as "A Plain Soup Ladle" according to the "Catalogue of the Magnificent Contents of Alton Towers, the Princely Seat of the Earls of Shrewsbury" (see photo). Length: 13.5" Weight: 182 grams Check out some of my other sterling silver here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/neurorocker?section_id=6783258 Or just browse around the shop! http://www.etsy.com/shop/neurorocker
