Ca 1750 George II English Pistol Grip Sterling Silver Flatware Set
$600.00
Ca 1750 English pistol grip sterling silver flatware set consisting of knife and fork recovered from a rural auction in York, PA. What American colonist was dining with these? Blades are steel and highly magnetic. Marked with a very rubbed maker mark-- possibly GS (George Smith III is possible and would date these later). Pistol handled fork and knife, the fork with three steel tines and silver handle; three steel tines rise from a baluster form shaft with flared collar that is inserted into the handle; silver handle with wavy sides terminating in a volute covered with an acanthus leaf;
President George Washington used very similar flatware to give a sense of the stature of these in the American colonies (see article in photos and linked here: https://www.mountvernon.org/preservation/collections-holdings/browse-the-museum-collections/object/w-495b/).
The fork at 8.25” and the knife at 7.5”.
Condition is fair as shown.
