Offered is an original watercolor sketch by Holmes Smith (1863-1937) executed on paper in around 1895 probably off the coast of Gloucester, MA. The scene is four views of a three rigged ship and a hand-written Christmas message that says, "A Merry Xmas to the Crew of the Hattie Jac'". Colors are muted and this is a classic Holmes Smith sketch by a well known regionalist. The painting is 6.75" x 10.75" and is sold unframed. Smith was a longtime faculty member of Washington University. He came to the University in 1884 as a drawing instructor and became professor of drawing and history of art in 1907. I have a number of Smith watercolors that were sourced from deaccessions from the family estate. Perfect for framing. marked on the back with an estate stamp for Holmes Smith.
