c. 1810-25 Chinese Carved Rock Crystal Quartz Snuff Bottle with Carved Flower and Cat
$600.00
Offered here is an incredible early 1800s snuff bottle made from quartz or rock crystal. Condition seems great with a couple of fleabites at the rim. This hand carved bottle uses the outer rind of the stone which is white to illustrate a scene of a cat lying beneath flower boughs on the front. On the rear is a highly detailed but light carving of the branches of an evergreen tree that hang above a bamboo grove where a small house stands in front of a wide bay with sailing ships. The sides too are decorated. One with the bamboo and one with the pine. Internal fractures are noted in the stone. It is not known if this is damage or just the inherent properties of this stone, but the material is stable. The top is ill fitting, but some fiddling might make it sit better.
Dimensions: 2.5" x 3.5"
In Chinese decorative arts and traditional culture, the combination of bamboo and pine often holds significant symbolism. Both bamboo and pine are highly esteemed in Chinese philosophy and art for their admirable qualities:
-Bamboo (Zhu, 竹): Flexibility and Strength. Bamboo is known for its flexibility and strength. It bends in the wind but does not break, symbolizing resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges.
Humility: Bamboo grows in abundance and often bends low, symbolizing humility and modesty. This characteristic is admired in Chinese culture.
-Pine trees (Song, 松): Longevity and Immortality. These trees can endure harsh conditions, representing longevity and immortality. The pine remains green even in winter, symbolizing the ability to overcome adversity and endure through time.
Combined Symbolism: Enduring Friendship. When bamboo and pine are depicted together, they often symbolize enduring friendship and steadfastness. The combination suggests a strong bond between friends who support and complement each other through thick and thin. Wish for Perseverance: The pairing of bamboo and pine may also convey a wish for perseverance and steadfastness in one's endeavors. It encourages individuals to remain resilient and flexible in the face of challenges.
