C. 1739 George II Sterling Silver London Pounce Pot Sterling Silver with Royal Monogram by Huguenot, John Hugh Le Sage

$395.00
A ca. 1739 George II sterling silver pounce pot probably by English Huguenot silversmith, John Hugh Le Sage (marked with cursive 'JS'). Also engraved with a conjoined C monogram under a four-pointed crown of nobility. The pierced cover can be pulled off and the pot would have been filled with pounce, a fine powder, used to dry ink and to smooth rough paper made sometimes of cuttlefish bone. Of pedestal form and raised on a circular foot. In good condition with moderate surface wear, commensurate with age. Rubbed, but legible maker mark. Free of any notable damage but with a repaired crack to the lid and possibly the foot. Rare little item whose owner could probably be identified with some research. Hallmarked faintly to each piece with the distinctive cursive 'GS' mark. Dimensions: 3.25" tall. Price is firm.
