Antique Burmese Solid Silver Covered Box (266 grams)

$460.00
This type of solid silver repousse lidded box is often described as a betel box. The betel nut is a popular psychostimulant in Southeast Asia, and was often stored in these elaborate boxes. This large betel box has been elaborately shaped into classic repousse floral motifs. The tall angled sides are decorated profusely with floral patterns. It's the perfect size to store your earrings, rings, or other little treasures. This covered box was made entirely by hand and hammer marks and other tool marks are evident. Recovered from an Ohio estate. Condition is fair because hinge needs work and is not attached. That said, it presents beautifully and has a tight-fitting lid. The bottom is marked 'SS' which I presume is shorthand for sterling silver. Weight is 296 grams. Dimensions: 3" x 5.25" x 5" x6" This item is not hallmarked, but sterling is guaranteed. Price is firm.
