A Fine and Tall 1778 London Hester Bateman George III Beaker in Sterling Silver
$2,200.00
Offered here is a 1778 Hester Bateman sterling silver tall beaker. Hand forged from a medium gauge of silver with an opulent simple profile nad a heavy gauge foot and rim. Hallmarks at the rim somewhat worn for Hester Bateman, and correct pre-1822 crowned leopard, lion passant, and script 'O' (in this case, for 1778). Recovered from an advanced Bateman collection. In some ways, she was England's finest.
Holding a Hester Bateman piece imparts the sense of wonder at the courage she must have had to pick up her husband's silver tools in 1761 and begin smithing after his death to feed her children. It was nearly unheard of in 18th century London and she was surely a woman of unparalleled bravery. She chose the hammer to feed her children as any truly courageous woman would.
This beaker is 5+" tall. Exactly 201 grams as if she wanted to always keep it over 200. Overall, this Georgian piece is in very good condition with a strong sense of purpose and design and an excellent patina. Condition seems near perfect without later Victorian clobbering
