1945-1975 Carl Poul Petersen Hand Wrought Sterling Silver Modernist Five Piece Tea Set (4,323 grams)
$9,500.00
This five-piece coffee and tea set with tray is a modernist masterpiece by Carl Poul Petersen (1895-1977) likely made in post-World War II Montreal of hand wrought sterling silver. Included is the matching large tray, horn-handled coffee pot (48 ounce), horn-handled teapot (48 ounce), cream and sugar.
This set is stamped on the underside with the PP mark, a lion head within a letter C (Canadian National Sterling mark), “Hand Made” and with "Sterling". The edge is decorated with Petersen's signature floral design and leaf feet on each piece. Drop-dead gorgeous finials. The silver surface has the “martelé” or hammered texture found on select Petersen high-end pieces.
Danish-born Petersen apprenticed with Georg Jensen and married his daughter, Inger, in 1922. They immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1922 and Petersen became Master Goldsmith at Birks. He launched his own shop from 1937 to 1939, but returned to Birks at the outset of WWII. He re-opened his shop in 1944. He supplied elite clients, including notable patron, Saidye Bronfman in Montreal. Petersen was also known to have created the "Presentation" Stanley Cup in 1963, the hockey championship trophy (now a replica is given and the original is located in the bank vault at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Ontario). "The Hunt brothers' manipulation of the silver market nearly put them in a position to fix the world price, and the expensive raw material of $50 an ounce troy had to be combined with continuously increasing wages. Many fine Petersen pieces were melted down for the silver." Therefore, a set like this is a true survivor. Although Petersen made many fine silver items, it seems sets of this size and quality are scarce. I strongly suspect this was a Bronfman commission, and it was recently recovered from Boca Raton from a prominent Jewish dealer. I'd gamble this could be established with enough research.
Petersen is Collected by: National Gallery of Canada, Royal Ontario Museum, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, McCord Museum of Canadian History, Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Ontario and others.
Condition notes: The set is in very good condition. Tray sits on four low profile raised feet and is in excellent condition with light surface scratches. Teapot, coffeepot, and creamer are in excellent condition. Handles are very snug and lids working elegantly and fitting well. No monograms, personalizations, or repairs. The sugar has a slight rock and a couple of minor dings that could be realigned (enquire if you would like us to take care of it in house).
Dimensions: Tray: 22", Coffee Pot: 9.5", Teapot 6.5", Cream and Sugar: 3.25"
Weight: 4,323 grams (Tray: 2,209 grams Teapot: 862 grams, Coffeepot: 730 grams, Sugar: 223 grams, and creamer 199 grams).
