Offered is an original watercolor painting by Florence Smithburn executed on paper in 1936 probably in Indiana. The scene is an agrarian one with two men working their fields with hoes. She had many groundbreaking shows throughout her career and worked in the United States and Africa. Smithburn was a standout artist even in high school. Her works have been collected by numerous museums, including the National Gallery of Art. Her work began picking up steam in the secondary art market with her 1995 sale of the oil painting entitled "Monda" May 23, 1995 in the American Paintings sale at Sotheby's (sale 7723, lot 199). Since then, her works have become more and more collectible and play an important role representing a woman artist in American Regionalism and among Hoosier artists.
