1930 Japanese Sterling Silver 950 Figural Shamisen Salt and Pepper

$115.00
Wonderful pair of solid 950 sterling silver gilt with enamel figural Japanese shamisen motif antique salt and pepper. The shamisen is a three-stringed instrument with a long, slender neck and a drum-like body covered with skin. It is played with a plectrum called a "bachi." The shamisen has been a significant part of traditional Japanese music for centuries and is often used in various genres, including classical, folk, and contemporary music. There are different types of shamisen, with the most common being the "tsugaru shamisen," "joushin shamisen," and "nagauta shamisen," each associated with specific styles of music and regions in Japan. These are older pieces with some very minor patina (in all the right places). Condition is near perfect leading me to believe they were unused. These weigh about 28 grams and are in good working order. Each shaker has a well-fitted sliding hatch door at the bottom that opens to fill with salt/pepper. Hatches open and close smoothly and securely. The shakers have the lines that you would expect in a shamisen. Great items! Dimensions are: 4"+ long. Stamped 'Sterling Japan'. Probably made 1920-1940.
