1930 Japanese Sterling Silver 950 Figural Kayabuki House Salt and Pepper
$115.00
Wonderful pair of solid 950 sterling silver gilt with enamel figural Japanese kayabuki motif antique salt and pepper their intricate thatched roofs. Traditional thatched-roof houses in Japan are called "kayabuki." These houses are characterized by their roofs made of thick layers of dried grass or straw. The thatched roof, known as "kaya" in Japanese, provides insulation and is well-suited to the country's climate. Kayabuki houses are often associated with rural areas and historical villages, and they have a distinctive appearance that reflects Japan's traditional architectural style. These are older pieces with some very minor patina (in all the right places). Condition is near perfect leading me to believe they were unused.
These weigh about 38 grams and are in good working order. Each shaker has a well-fitted sliding hatch door at the bottom that opens to fill with salt/pepper. Hatches open and close smoothly and securely. The fine work on the shakers is embossed with details like windows and doors etc. The shakers have the lines that you would expect in a kayabuki. Great items! Dimensions are: 2 1/8" long. Stamped 'Sterling 950'. Probably made 1920-1940.
