1929 Award to E J Blackaby from the Governor of Cyprus Sir Ronald Storrs Made in Greece of 800 Silver

$525.00
A Cypriot solid silver (800 silver) trophy cup. The markings are for Cyprus and ΓΣτ stands for the maker Γιώργος Στεφανίδης. A second marking with initials rendered jn artistic form, and placed in the middle. Also with a stand likely made by a Greek maker on the island of Lefkada on behalf of Sir Ronald Storrs, Governor of Cyprus for physician Dr. Ernest James Blackaby RCSE (Colonial Medical Service: the personnel section of the Colonial Service, employing the doctors who tended to the health of both the colonial staff and the local populations of the British Empire.) who was the District Medical Officer until October 1929. In addition to his normal role in caring for patients in British Colonial Cyprus, it is apparent that Storrs fell ill in 1929 and it is thus likely that Blackaby was the personal physician for Storrs. Storrs left Cyprus in 1929 year for South Africa because of his illness. In his normal duties, it is easy to wonder if Blackaby cared for the local Cypriots in the course of his duties including the ~100 leprosy patients in his district of Nicosia. As for the cup itself, it is handmade with evidence of fine hammer marks on the inside and under the base. The cup is inscribed on one side with the inscription, "Dr E. J. Blackaby in Gratitude from Sir Ronald Storrs Cyprus". On the opposing side, in well executed repousse are the two lions of the British Colonial Arms for Cyprus used by government officials, but not granted. The cup fits on a turned wood base, the bottom marked for Dimitris Loizou & Son Upholsterer M(N)iaras 27 Lefkada, Greece. Condition is good with just a couple of small dings, but nothing serious whatsoever. Weight: 293 grams Dimensions: Cup: 4.75" x 6" Pedestal: 2.25" x 5.5" Check out some of my other sterling silver here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/neurorocker?section_id=6783258 Or just browse around the shop! http://www.etsy.com/shop/neurorocker
