Walter Whitcomb Thompson (1882-1948) oil on canvas, signed lower left and titled ("On the Shawsheen") and signed on the reverse with a second small sketch in oil paint. Thompson was born in Palatka, Florida in 1882, but also maintained up and down the Eastern seaboard, frequently painting and exhibiting in New England, and co-founding and directing the Beaufort (SC) Art Colony. His formal studies were at the University of Florida and the New School of Design in Boston, Mass. Thompson is listed in Who Was Who in American Art by Falk and Fielding’s Dictionary of American Painters, Sculptors & Engravers. Condition: Craquelure to the surface (see pictures). Needs revarnished. Size: 12" x 16" and with a 15" x 19" frame.
