1900 Set of 17 Nomura of Nagahama Meiji Japanese Mixed Metal Pure Silver Plates (6120 grams)

This is a rare and ultra-fine assembled full set of twelve (12) Meiji-era mixed metal with pure silver plates from Japan with natural motifs. Each plate is different and signed by the individual artisan. Inset metals include copper and presumably gold. Each plate marked with the 'jungin' (純銀) mark that was used in Japan 1868-1912. Plates: 1. Two irises beside a pond, one inset with gold 田中刻 Engraved by Tanaka 2. A peony which has lost a single gold petal 井川刻 Engraved by Ikawa 3. A stand of poppies with copper inlay 4. Canary melons ripening on the vine set in copper 菊地刻 Engraved by Kikuchi 5. Corn ears on the ground amidst stones set in copper 竹閒刻 Engraved by .Chikuma 6. A small highly figured songbird amongst the branches of a tree 大谷刻 Engraved by Otani 7. A golden dragonfly within a stand of bamboo sprigs 神谷刻 Engraved by Kamaya 8. A copper frog that swims beneath the water among the aquatic plants 福田刻 Engraved by Fukydaya. The word ‘frog’ in Japanese is pronounced the same as the word ‘return’, which is why the frog is considered a Japanese lucky animal and seen as good fortune in things returning. 9. A copper frog that rests on a lily pad in blossom 櫻井刻 Engraved by Sakurai 10. A cluster of copper ruffled poppies 川原刻 Engraved by Kawara 11. A simple one with roses, signed Nomura on the back. 刻 = engraved 12. A cock with three feeding chicks, 渡邊製 Watanabe (maker) on obverse. Engraved by 光照刻. 13. A cluster of chrysanthemum blossoms 14.
