1896 Monumental Danish Sterling Silver Spoon by Christesen 14"+

$250.00
This 1896 Christesen Danish solid silver fiddle thread pattern spoon is truly large spoon. At over 14 1/8" long, it's the largest I've ever handled. My understanding is that these Danish spoons were sometimes given on the occasion of a wedding and indeed the dated (1900) gift inscription suggests that may be the case. These were sometimes used for serving julegrøt (riseporrage) in Scandanavia, Any way you use it today is fine, but there will be endless jokes when you dish out the mashed potatoes about one spoonful or two? Overall, this spoon has a stout and impressive profile and very unusual proportions. Well made and in good condition with expected normal light surface scratching from more than a century of use. Marked with a two letter conjoined maker mark. Marked "V. CHRISTESEN". Marked with the Danish three castle mark with year (96). There is a single additional example by the same maker in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art which can be seen by searching their collection for: "V. Christensen" (they have made an error on the web site in the spelling). ~14.125” in length. 3.25” across the bowl.
