1895 Gloucester Seascape from a Rigged Sailing Ship by Holmes Smith - Original Watercolor Painting (5.5" x 9")
$225.00
Offered is an original watercolor painting by Holmes Smith (1863-1937) executed on paper in around 1895 probably off the coast of Gloucester, MA. The scene is from a rigged ship looking out on the water. A lady with a parasol and a man with a bowler are on the deck. Colors are spectacular and this is a classic Holmes Smith painting by a well known regionalist. The painting is 5.5" x 9" and is sold unframed. Smith was a longtime faculty member of Washington University. He came to the University in 1884 as a drawing instructor and became professor of drawing and history of art in 1907. I have a number of Smith watercolors that were sourced from deaccessions from the family estate. Perfect for framing.
