1890 Danish Baptismal Gilt Sterling Silver Spoon by Bernhard Hertz
$480.00
This is a scarce and fine Danish silver gilt baptismal spoon by heralded maker, Bernhard Hertz of Copenhagen, Denmark (1834-1909). This piece is decorated with the Madonna and King Canute IV on the front and the phrases "Mary, Keep me all of mine from Eternal Death" and "All is as God Wills it". The obverse is engraved with the image of King Olaf II Haraldsson 995-29. King Olaf is depicted holding a battle ax, a symbol of his martyrdom. Clearly hallmarked with the three towers mark, B Hertz, and another unidentified mark. The condition is spectacular with an amazing frosted ultra-pale gold matte finish. I've never seen anything like it, but this is what Hertz was famous for.
Along the stem is written the words: "sup hept bren tich icke".
Dimensions: 7.25".
Weight: 66.1 grams.
