1914 Sterling Silver Gorham Presentation Trowel for Construction of the Erie Canal
A very heavy and significant sterling silver Gorham presentation trowel given to the Engineer and “man who made the dirt fly” on the Erie Canal. Beautiful piece with an elaborate cast handle and endcap alongside a carved bone handle. On the plain blade, engraved in a gorgeous script, it is stated:
“Presented to
the man who made the
dirt fly on the barge
canal
The Hon J A Bensel
State Engineer and Surveyor
1911-1914
By the employees
of
his Department”
Marked on the reverse for Gorham, Sterling, and 2551. This trowel is fine, nicely polished and no damage.
It is 13" long. In excellent condition.
