1871 Whiting Bamboo Parcel Gilt Berry Spoon Service Boxed Aesthetic Period (M1 Pattern)

Scarce Whiting Bamboo motif parcel gilt sterling silver vegetable or berry spoon serving set boxed in a pink silk-lined leather box. The box by the original NYC retailer Black, Starr & Frost. This set features engraved bamboo at the terminal on matte finish and with parcel gilt bowl with an orange peel finish. One spoon with a larger bowl than the other. Spoons are well-stamped 'sterling', with the Whiting mark, and 'M1'. This is a known as yet not well-characterized Whiting pattern. Enclosed in the box is a late 19th century calling card with a black border, probably signifying the death of a spouse. This is likely the giver of the set. A partial paper label on the box has a the date 11.6.71 indicating the spoon was given or purchased by Mrs. Evans in 1871 right at the beginning of the Aesthetic Period. Condition is extremely good with light surface scratching. Exceedingly small ding in the larger bowl-- too small to photograph well. 9" in length. 126 grams.
