1870-90 Sterling Silver Gilt Aesthetic Period Spoon Possibly Wood & Hughes

$100.00
This is a fascinating small serving spoon with a serrated or ruffled edge and excellent engraving in the bowl and along the stem and terminal. It is a classic example of well-executed Aesthetic period surface decoration and it seems to be a rare example. The decorations are a floral swag in the bowl and then perhaps the top of a vase of flowers with a lone fern sprig that spills down the stem. There are very similar engravings on Wood & Hughes pieces of this period and they also made spoons with the ruffled edge although this exact type has not yet been identified. Some wear to the gilding on the top side of the bowl, but other wise in excellent condition. It could be a berry spoon or a sugar spoon perhaps. Marked only 'STERLING'. 31 grams 6.75" Check out some of my other sterling silver flatware here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP?ref=shop_sugg§ion_id=7399760 Or just browse around the shop! https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP
