1860-1890 Chinese Export Covered Butter Dish by Cantonese Maker WA (~298 grams) with Reticulated Dragons, Birds, and Chrysanthemum
$3,000.00
An 1860-1890 Chinese export covered butter dish by Cantonese maker, Jing Ji 鏡記 (mark is partial) for retailer, Wa Chun ('WA') of Canton and Hong Kong with Reticulated Dragons, Birds, and Chrysanthemum In excellent condition. Made of a good quality gauge of silver, this butter box is prolifically decorated in four-toed dragons, the figural one on the lid especially dramatic amidst the stylized clouds. The paneled decorations on the body of the dish and its underplate may represent seasons.. Birds in bamboo, birds in prunus or cherry, chrysanthemum etc.. There are figural lion handles with ring that are highly reminiscent of bronze lion door pulls of the period. The underplate is also decorated, possibly with a pair of fish. Remarkably, the original hand blown liner is also present and seems to be free of any chips or cracks. Marked clearly on the legs of the underplate 'WA'. Recently recovered from an old private Dutch collection. Would adapt well as a caviar dish. What a spectacular item!
Dimensions: 2.25" x 3" x 5.125"
Weight: 298 grams
