1838-1846 Froment-Meurice 13" Scalloped Sterling Silver Serving Tray - Paris (856 grams)

$2,600.00
A very fine sterling silver dish executed by the legendary François-Désiré Froment-Meurice of Paris 1825-38. The dish is round, measuring 11.75" across. This item has a beautiful period monogram at the rim very likely engraved by the hand of Meurice himself as he was a legendary engraver. The back is left unadorned. Very clearly hallmarked for Froment Meurice in block letters and in their traditional maker mark. Also marked with the Minerva and a bigorne. Overall, the gauge is extremely medium, but it's a nice big service plate or tray. 856 grams. Recently recovered from a Chicago-area estate (Ex-Richard Fill collection). "He produced a spectacular, fully equipped toilette for the duchess of Parma (1855–58), now at the Musée d'Orsay; it was commissioned in 1845 by a subscription circulated among Legitimist ladies of France for the marriage of Louise-Thérèse de Bourbon, granddaughter of Charles X, with the future duke Charles III of Parma. It was completed in time to be included in the Great Exhibition, London, 1851. Among his private clients were writers and dandies, like Honoré de Balzac and the fastidious Théophile Gautier. For Balzac Froment-Meurice executed a canne aux singes ("Monkey Tankard") designed by the sculptor Pierre-Jules Cavelier, which Balzac presented to his brother-in-law Georges Mniszech; it bears the portrait of the comtesse Hanska. For the connoisseur-collector the duc de Luynes, he carried out a table of repoussé silver." In very good antique condition with wear and patina commensurate with age and usage. There is surface scratching that could be professionally conserved in the manner of your choosing.
