1834-35 John M Smith Coin Silver Punch Ladle and Sauce Ladle Nashville Tennessee - Monogram LHH
$3,000.00
Offered here is a scarce Nashville, Tennessee coin silver punch ladle with a classic early 1800s profile. Marked 'J M Smith' in jagged cartouche on the handle back and with a period monogram 'LHH'. Gorgeous! Roughly 14" and 169 grams. Condition is superb with a very small tear near the handle bowl join. Together with a matching sauce ladle or gravy ladle marked with the same 'LHH' monogram and 'J M Smith' mark at the handle back. This smaller ladle has a bowl with an interesting oval profile. Gravy ladle is 6" and 34 grams. Total weight on the pair is: 203 grams.
"John M. Smith's advertisement in the 19 June 1835 Nashville Union announced the sale of his jewelry store to Daniel Webb (q.v.) and John S. Britain (q.v.). He requested that his customers pick up their repaired watches and pay the charges in cash. Although the evolving form of Smith's mark (figs. 119a, 119c, 119d, 119e) seems to indicate an artisan who worked over a number of years, the only documentation of his trade history lies in one advertisement and in his silver."
