1821 Thomas Burwash George III Sterling Silver Covered Chafing Dish with Armorial for Surgeon-Captain Napier Close

$2,600.00
This heavy antique sterling silver covered chafing dish or covered entree made just after the death of King George III (and just prior to the coronation of George IV) has an elaborate rectangular form on four outswept lion's paw feet, in the classic English style with raised rounded borders ornamented with impressive applied scallop and acanthus decorated rim. Matched marks on three pieces for Thomas Burwash, 1821, London, sterling silver. An elegant hand chased armorial was personalized later in life (top and bottom) with the arms of Surgeon-Captain Napier Close. This is the height of elegance on any sideboard or for keeping food warm throughout the meal. 200 years old! With the chafing dish, the lower most container will be filled with hot water. Then the food dish is suspended above the water and covered. This would keep the food warmer longer. Note, the original bottom section is made of old sheffield plate (OSP) which is an amalgam of copper and silver layers. Note that the heavy cast feet and handles on the OSP portion traditionally solid silver. This is typical of chafing dishes of the era (this section excluded from the weight). The two dishes above this and the handle are solid sterling silver and are so hallmarked. The solid sterling silver handle is removable, so if you weren't trying to keep things warm you can actually remove the handle and lay the top itself upside down for another silver dish (giving you three dishes in one). The bottom rim of the top is even decorated with gadroon borders for this purpose! All parts are heavy duty metal of a heavy and significant gauge. In good antiques condition, there are scratches and a couple of small ding in it. The handle is a gorgeous cast figural 'Green Man' motif. Dimensions: 7.5" x 9.5" x 14.75" Weight: 1,871 grams (60 OZT or 4 pounds 20 ounces) Condition is excellent with 'blushing' of the OSP portion where the underlying copper shows. Wine for scale; wooden tray sold separately.
