$70.00
Offered here is a handsome book of psalms and hymns fully leather bound in burgundy gilt leather by Isaac Watts, D.D. Brown marbled interior. Published by Samuel Wadsworth, New Haven in 1821 and printed by S. Converse. This is a, "new edition, in which the psalms omitted by Dr. Watts, are versified, local passages are altered, and a number of psalms are versified anew, in proper metres. By Timothy Dwight, D.D. Late President of Yale College at the Request of the General Association of Connecticut. To the psalms is added, a selection of hymns. 568 pages Great provenance on this piece. The book originally belonged to Yale graduate, Thomas Day. He was Secretary of State for Connecticut (and brother of Yale President, Jeremiah Day). Day began to attend sessions of the Connecticut Supreme Court and took notes to report on decisions. This experience would later lead to his appointment as the first reporter of the Supreme Court of Connecticut in 1814, a position he held until 1853. He later co-authored the first anti-abortion law in the United States, a law that declared poisoning illegal as a method of fetal termination. Day was also the founder of the Connecticut Historical Society in 1825 and became the President when it was reorganized in 1839. Several years later, Day received an honorary degree from Yale in 1847. Condition is in great shape with some minor chips to the upper backstrap and spine edge. Typical minor bumps, scuffs, and wear as well as foxing to exterior facing pages (and minor throughout), but binding is sound and the text is bright and clear.
