$3,000.00
Fine 1817 George III English (Sheffield) sterling silver wine coaster pair with gorgeous hand-turned mahogany wood inset and a repousse acanthus motif rim. The wood is notable for its rich wavy grain. The body of each coaster is augmented with repousse scrolling leaf and bursting floral designs. These antique bottle coasters are fitted with green baize to the bottom. These were recently recovered from a Charleston, SC estate. Both are stamped at the foot clearly for John & Thomas Settle, Sheffield, sterling, and 1812 and use the alternative Sheffield marks that were available to makers in Sheffield from about 1740-1850. Gauge of silver is medium, but owing to the workmanship, they feel very sturdy-- 605 grams, the pair. Condition is good antique with some signs of old repairs as shown in photos. 6.75” in total diameter (5.125" opening and 2.25" tall-- easily accommodating a magnum bottle and larger.
