Offered for sale, an exceptional Federal Period silver covered sugar bowl Nicholas James Bogert of New York (working 1801-1843), constructed there during the aftermath of the Revolution when there were about 100,000 people in the city. The circular sugar bowl sits on a pedestal foot and has two milled bands. A flower finial and two prominent handles. The lid is tight fitting and the overall gauge is heavy. Bogert was an important silversmith working until 1803 in NYC and then later in Montgomery, NY. A very similar covered sugar bowl is shown on the American Silversmith's website and has been dated to 1800-1810.
Mark: early N J Bogert mark without retailer marks that appear on his later production.
