1809 Georgian Monumental Sterling Silver English Meat Skewer or Letter Opener (190 grams)
$1,400.00
You'll be very hard pressed to find another sterling silver meat skewer like this. What separates this item from the pack of them is its massive size at just over 16.5" long and 190 grams. Decorated nicely front and back with the shell and thread pattern near the finger loop, it's a beauty. Clearly and crisply marked for London (crowned leopard), sterling (lion passant), 1809 (O in shield), George III export mark, and RR maker mark (Robert Rutland). Condition is very good with minor surface scratching and patina consistent with age and use.
This can certainly be used for opening the toughest letters and it is extremely strong for that purpose. Or it could be hung as a decorative object in the kitchen. If you plan on serving meats of extraordinary size, it could be used that way as well (i.e. hold the turkey or pork shoulder as you slice it).
It is 4mm thick at the 'hilt' and about 2mm thick at the tip. Width tapers from 18mm at the 'hilt to 2mm at the tip. 42 cm in length (~16.5")
