1809-19 Jean-Charles Cahier French Antique Sterling Silver Serving Plate with Egg and Dart Pattern and Monogram - Paris (716 grams)
$3,600.00
Extraordinary sterling silver dinner plate or tray by Jean-Charles Cahier (1772-1857), silversmith to the French King and successor to the shop of Martin-Guillaume Biennais. Cahier was trained in the workshop of the famous Martin-Guillaume Biennais, which he took over in 1821 after Biennais’ retirement. Cahier was appointed silversmith to both Restauration monarchs, Louis XVIII and Charles X. One record states that he was bankrupted in in 1828, but he clearly continued to operate until around 1849, when his workshop was assumed by Rénaud-Placide Poussielgue-Rusant. Silver literally fit for a King— or perhaps a Queen.
Marked also with the 1st standard right facing cock and the middle guaranty. Recently recovered from a Chicago-area estate (Ex-Richard Fill collection).
Marked with a partially struck, but clear enough mark 'JCC' under a horizontal line. Above it would have been the Hebrew letters for the word for Jehovah, but these are not present. Condition is very good with a pleasing patina that has not been overly polished.
716 grams. 10.75”.
