1808-09 Lockwood & Cheavens of New York Coin Silver Beaker
$2,600.00
A hammered silver beaker with an intriguing inscription, "R. Lawrence to B. Hurd, Lima Feb'y 12th 1828". Is it Lima, NY or Lima, Peru?? It also has a pretty intriguing maker's mark that I can't find another example (swear I had a spoon with this mark at one time). I think this 'L&C' mark most likely represents the partnership of Lockwood & Cheavens who worked at 111 Cherry Street in New York City c. 1808-1809, but I am not certain as I can't find other examples of the mark. Perhaps the inscription was the Robert Lawrence and Benjamin Hurd both held prisoner by the British on the HMS Jersey... I have not yet determined it. Notice the hammer marks, seamed construction, and flared lip.
