1805-1808 Thaddeus Keeler Coin Silver Three Piece Tea Set New York City

$8,000.00
A Thaddeus Keeler 1805-08 American Empire three-piece coin silver tea set with milled bands. Thaddeus Keeler worked but a few years before his death in the first quarter of the 19th century. This set is large scale and showy. These make extensive use of milled bands including bands that have acorns and oak leaves, but also the classic anthemion pattern. These are completely handmade with hammer marks evident on the interior of each piece. Each is monogrammed with 'B' well engraved in cursive script. A well-proportioned teapot with ebonized handle wrapped in a milled band of acorns and oak leaves, an innovative feature rarely if ever seen elsewhere. The set is distinguished by its imposing angular form and its milled bands of gadrooning and oak leaves and acorns. With its additional milled bands of anthemion, the set retains some of the flavor of earlier Federal forms. Its most distinctive feature, however, and the one that elevates it above the ordinary, is the superbly rendered cast terminals on the boldly curved handles. The two-handled sugar, imposing for its size and weight, is similarly decorated. Perhaps the most important surviving work by Thaddeus Keeler's shop at 350 Pearl Street in New York City before he entered into partnership with Nathan Keeler in 1809. One 'barrel form mug' is known to have sold at Christie's in 1992 [1992 | Live Auction 7305 Silver, Lot 476]. Condition is near mint, museum-ready with age-appropriate patina. Professionally conserved by master silversmith, Jeffrey Herman. Thaddeus Keeler is well-represented in collections: The Metropolitan Museum of Art accession number: 33.120.461 ["Teaspoon"] Brooklyn Museum accession number: 67.56.9 ["Spoon"] RISD accession number: 1989.045.12.127.1 ["Teaspoon"] Yale University Art Gallery accession number: 1996.22.12.1-2 ["Two Tablespoons"] and accession number 11985.85.384-5 ["Sugar tongs"] New York Historical Society Museum & Art Gallery accession number: 1971.66 ["Teaspoon"] Winterthur various accession numbers [spoons] Weight: 1994.2 grams (~64 ozt) Dimensions of teapot: 5" x 8.5" x 12" Check out some of my other sterling silver here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP?ref=search_shop_redirect§ion_id=19121632 Or just browse around the shop! https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP
