1804-05 Joseph Smith II, Sterling Silver George III London Whitebait Server (Fish Slice, Asparagus)
$350.00
A scarce early 1805 Joseph Smith II sterling silver whitebait server (you'll use it for asparagus, petit fours, or canapés). This wonderfully hand pierced piece is truly spectacular for it's high quality hand chased details in the Greek Key pattern. These fish servers, made right at the beginning of the 19th century have been argued for serving whitebait (Reference: Silver Magazine (Jan/Feb 2002, p. 36) which is a small fish eaten mouth to tail in England often after having been battered and fried. The form here does fit the function, but the spring loaded two piece form is useful for lots of things! This allows you to both clean and to use it without the upper portion for pie or anything else. Marked: lion passant (sterling), crowned leopard (London), I (1804-05), George III, and IS. Monogrammed 'WW'.
Condition is nearly perfect with light wear and surface scratches.
Weight is about 185 grams.
