1800-1810 Joseph Shoemaker of Philadelphia Coin Silver Covered Sugar Bowl with Federalist Eagle Handles

Offered for sale, an exceptional Federal Period silver covered sugar bowl Joseph Shoemaker of Philadelphia (working 1785-1829), constructed there during a patriotic moment in our nation's history. The rectangular sugar bowl sits on four ball feet and has three milled bands of oak leaves etc. An acorn finial and two very nice early federalist eagle handles. The lid is tight fitting and the overall gauge is heavy. Shoemaker was an important silversmith working until 1829 in Philadelphia. His works are collected by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Yale University Art Gallery and the Met among others. A very similar covered sugar bowl is shown on the American Silversmith's website and has been dated to 1800-1810.

1. Mark; under bottom; handsomely struck J Shoemaker in a fitted rectangular cartouche
2. Inscription; side of body; engraved in a fancy cursive script initials "MAD";
