1800-1804 Saunders Pitman of Providence, Rhode Island Coin Silver Transitional Coffin End Spoon

A highly unusual transitional design coffin end fiddle fin teaspoon by Saunders Pitman of Providence, Rhode Island who worked there having numerous partners. Condition is good, but with a small crack at the bowl (shown). Monogrammed 'R'. Recently recovered from Massachusetts. Truly a unique and one of a kind design that I have never seen elsewhere. Assumed to be experimental on the part of Pitman. Finally marked for Pitman in a bold and clear stamp. Note it has a slight asymmetry that is charming. Perhaps his eyes or hands were flagging a bit toward the very last years of his life when this was made, even if his imagination had been spared.
