Offered for sale, a fine Federal Period silver sugar urn by Samuel Alexander of Philadelphia, constructed there during a turbulent and critical moment in our nation's history. Alexander was an important silversmith (for example marked an askos for Thomas Jefferson). He also worked in Richmond, but as this piece was found in rural PA, it is believed to be of his Philadelphia work. This piece was traveling with other pieces of Philadelphia silver including the Garrett creamer in this shop (https://www.etsy.com/listing/1603840821/philadelphia-1815-20-coin-silver-cream). The lid with a beaded girdle and a traditional urn form finial. The body a pierced gallery surmounting a beaded rim tapering to a round foot with a beaded girdle and decorated at the base. A perfectly fitted lid Also collected by Yale, The Met, Mark: 1. Mark; on foot; struck here is the maker's mark "S Alexander" in rectangle; 2.
