Offered for sale, a fine Federal Period silver sugar urn by Samuel Alexander of Philadelphia, constructed there during a turbulent and critical moment in our nation's history. Alexander was an important silversmith (for example marked an askos for Thomas Jefferson). He also worked in Richmond, but as this piece was found in rural PA, it is believed to be of his Philadelphia work. 2. Inscription; side of body; engraved bright-cut cartouche suspended over laurels; within, the foliate script initials "SH" (possibly Henry family); at the other side 'MWC'
