Offered for sale, an exceptional Federal Period silver sugar urn by John David of Philadelphia, constructed there during a turbulent and critical moment in our nation's history. David was an important silversmith until he was stricken with 'malignant fever' (Yellow Fever) and died in 1793. The lid with a beaded girdle and an elegant pineapple finial. The body a pierced gallery surmounting a beaded rim tapering to a round foot with a beaded girdle and decorated at the base. Pierced gallery Mark: 1. Mark; under foot; struck twice under foot is the maker's mark "IDAVID" in rectangle; 2. Inscription; side of body; engraved bright-cut cartouche suspended over laurels; within, the foliate script initials "JPL"; Dimensions: Weight: 359 grams Dimensions (inches) 8.5" (H) , 10.079 (L) , 4.25 (W) Condition: a few small dings and the bottom rim of the top needs reshaping.
