1776 Hester Bateman George III Cream Jug with Initials of EB

$1,500.00
Spectacular early 1776 Hester Bateman ("Queen of English Silversmiths") sterling silver cream jug. Hand forged from a heavy gauge of silver with an opulent simple profile. Hallmarks at the rim for Hester Bateman, and correct pre-1822 crowned leopard, lion passant, and script 'a'. Hand engraved initials beneath the spout, 'EB'. Recovered from New York State. Holding a Hester Bateman piece imparts the sense of wonder at the courage she must have had to pick up her husband's silver tools in 1761 and begin smithing after his death to feed her children. It was nearly unheard of in 18th century London and she was surely a woman of unparalleled bravery. Bateman should be considered a hero to women. This pitcher is 4.5" tall. Overall, this Georgian piece is in very good condition with a strong sense of purpose and design and an excellent patina. Condition seems near perfect without later Victorian clobbering Check out some of my other UK sterling silver here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP?ref=search_shop_redirect§ion_id=6409956 Or just browse around the shop! https://www.etsy.com/shop/DCSILVERSHOP
