Offered for sale, an exceptional colonial American covered silver sugar bowl by Nicholas Roosevelt of New York. This sugar is marked at the bottom with the 'NR' mark in rectangular cartouche. Inverted pear form on molded circular foot, the domed handle with a flaring ring handle. No monograms and no removals are noted. The design of these sugars have much in common with mid-17th century Chinese covered rice bowls. A nearly identical sugar bowl by Samuel Johnson is in the collection of Historic Deerfield, illustrated in Flynt and Fales, The Heritage Foundation Collection of Silver, 1968, fig. 62, p. 90.
