1735-1740 Jonathan Clarke of Newport, Rhode Island Silver Teaspoon with Rattail

A scarce 1735-40 solid cast silver teaspoon with a rattail made by Jonathan Clarke of Newport, Rhode Island monogrammed M*C. This spoon has all the classic characteristics, and is clearly marked with Clarke's IC in oval cartouche [Reference: Winterthur]. Rattail shows wear. Perhaps the marks were worn away. Nonetheless, a nice heavy gauge spoon. Upturned terminal. Condition is very good with slight bowl wear. A scarce and exceedingly rare form. Ex-collection of Gebelein. Clarke's work is collected in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design Museum, Winterthur Museum, and Yale University Art Gallery.
