A classic trencher salt from the earliest part of the 18th century (reign of Joseph I). Very nicely marked for Augsberg and for the maker Johann Ulrich Jebenz; Augsburg, Germany with the VI mark. Jebenz was know for making trencher salts and there is one in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London also parcel gilt and of similar shape and proportions. Condition is good with only slight patina. Owner's initials at one foot (subtle and of the period). Tiny niche from a jeweler's file. Tremolierstich on bottom.
