1696 Norwich Assay, prob. Elizabeth Hazelwood, William and Mary Sterling Silver Trefid Tablespoon
$8,500.00
There's an excellent chance you won't know when you start reading this why it's so incredibly special because it is so rare. Offered is a c. 1696 sterling silver Norwich, England assay plain trefid tablespoon with rattail recovered recently from a Florida estate. Maker mark is absent, but since there were only two makers in Norwich at the time, and because the terminal is very distinct, I believe this is very likely by Elizabeth Hazelwood. The Norwich city assay mark is extremely clear, and shown as the seeded rose. This also has an old dated (1974) London antique dealer's tag- I replaced the rotten string on this but retained the provenance). It's an exceedingly scarce form and a hard one to find!
A nice medium-heavy gauge spoon. Slight upturn of the terminal. Condition is very good with honest wear on the bowl and terminal, especially on the rattail. Inscription reads:
T
L A
I*P
1692
Length: 7.5"
Weight: 51 grams
So rare is Norwich silver that it frequently makes the news when it comes up for auction! See here: https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/23019553.citys-silver-spoon-reign-charles-ii-auction/
