1695-1715 'RS' Colonial Dognose Rattail Salt Spoon or Child's Toy
$850.00
Exceedingly unusual and rare late 17th or early 18th century American silver dognose rattail salt spoon or child's spoon by a known but unattributed maker [Reference: Winterthur]. A survivor and indeed one of the rarest types of American spoons you might hope to find today. A handful of examples are known in a private London collection of English diminutive dognose or trefid spoons. Condition is good with wear consistent with age. Hand forged, not cast. This wavy end spoon has a duck egg shaped bowl. A sharply downturned terminal made with a crease. Well marked in two rectangular cartouches. One cartouche appears to show the remains of a capital letter such as maybe an 'I'. The other is clearly the RS shown in the Winterthur catalog. Good luck finding another!
3” in length.
Weight: negligible
