1690 Wiliam and Mary London Sterling Silver Porringer or Caudle Cup by Timothy Ley
$2,000.00
Offered for sale is a substantial William and Mary London 1690 sterling silver porringer in the Queen Mary style by Timothy Ley of London. Porringers, for porridge or soup, were first made in the last half of the seventeenth century. They differ from caudle cups in that the sides are straight and not curved. The acanthus leaf decoration is often seen on them as it is here. Flower swags encircle the rim under the flared lip. This silver porringer is fitted with two ribbed S scroll handles. Hammer marks are evident. Average size. The decoration to the body incorporates a scrolling leaf and scale motif. Condition is good and the cup is water-fast. Signs of old cracks and repairs at the rim and battle scars as you'd expect from a three century old item. Cup is out of true, but is still graceful. The hallmarks appear to be the best example of Ley's marks and are extraordinarily crisp and with period marriage style initials on the bottom:
L
I * D
We Are Seven
And often after sunset, sir,
When it is bright and fair,
I take my little porringer,
And eat my supper there.
-William Wordsworth
Dimensions:
Height 8.4cm/3.32"
Width across handles 17cm/6.7"
Diameter of top 10.3cm/4"
Diameter of base 7.5cm/3.0"
